Our mission

RMAIIG is Colorado’s most active AI community, built on the belief that AI literacy, equity, and workforce readiness must be available to everyone regardless of background, income, or technical experience. Through free monthly events, peer-led learning, and sector-specific programs, we work to ensure no one is left behind as AI reshapes education, work, and civic life across the Rocky Mountain Region.

Our story

RMAIIG was founded on March 6, 2023 by Boulder-based tech community builder Dan Murray, who saw in the AI boom the same transformative energy he’d witnessed at the dawn of the Web. The early response was extraordinary: the first online meetup in April 2023 drew 298 RSVPs, and the first in-person gathering in June 2023 packed a Boulder room with 100 attendees. Those numbers told a clear story — Colorado’s AI community was ready.

Monthly meetups at CU Boulder’s ATLAS Institute followed, growing steadily through 2023 and 2024 as the group added specialized subgroups to serve every corner of the AI landscape. By RMAIIG’s second anniversary in March 2025, membership had reached 2,400. In July 2025, the community formalized its structure with the launch of Rocky Mountain AI, a Colorado 501(c)(3) nonprofit, to enable corporate sponsorship and long-term sustainability. Today RMAIIG counts more than 7,500 members across the Front Range.

What we do

Eleven subgroups across the Front Range, each focused on a specific corner of the AI landscape from engineering and product to education, ethics, marketing, law, and beyond. Each group runs its own free monthly meetups, led by practitioners in that space. This isn’t generic AI content: it’s the conversations happening in your field, with the people doing the work. Whether you want to stay current, build skills, or find collaborators, there’s a subgroup built for where you are. All skill levels are welcome at every event.

Our founder

Dan Murray is a Boulder-based serial entrepreneur and tech community builder. He founded RMAIIG in 2023 after recognizing the same once-in-a-generation shift in AI that he’d seen with the early internet — when he founded the Rocky Mountain Internet Users Group in 1994. Dan leads RMAIIG with a simple philosophy: “If you want something, you should create it for other people, and then you’ll have it, too.” He coordinates with subgroup leads, sponsors, and volunteers to keep the community free, open, and growing.

Our parent organization

RMAIIG is supported by Rocky Mountain AI, a 501(c)(3) Colorado nonprofit working to accelerate beneficial AI adoption across the region through education, community, and collaboration. Corporate sponsors — including platinum partners Brad Feld and Kamiwaza — help keep every RMAIIG event free and open to all.
